I have been an academic historian since the early 1990s, holding positions in both the United Kingdom and the United States. I am an expert on twentieth century British history, with particular interests in gender (especially masculinity), emotions, war, film, and fashion. I joined the Department of History at the University of Sussex as the inaugural Professor of War and History in 2015, having spent the previous twelve years as the Henry R. Winkler Professor of Modern History at the University of Cincinnati. My publications include The Flyer: British Culture and the Royal Air Force, 1939-1945 (Oxford University Press, 2008), which was runner-up for the Longman-History Today Prize.
