2020 was a landmark year for demography. It is very likely that the annual number of deaths will exceed that of births for the first time in Hong Kong’s history. Nearby Taiwan also had 10,246 more deaths than births. In South Korea births were down 10.6 per cent from 2019. I could go on. But if governments can remove the barriers to marriage and raise the marriage rate, there would likely be a significant increase in total fertility rates.
