You’ve survived the grueling search. You’ve sent out dozens of applications, tweaked your resume, re-written your cover letter and now, finally, you have an interview. Brush the dust off your suit and you’re ready. Right? Wrong!
Today you need to be even better prepared for your interview than ever before. You are one of dozens, or maybe hundreds of candidates. You need to stand out. You need to impress the employer with your enthusiasm, interest and know-how. So, before you lint-roll your suit, you need to take some serious time to prepare for the interview.
How to prepare for your first interview:
- Check out the company’s website. Most established businesses have a website and that is your first clue. Take notes of important details, things you can bring up naturally in the interview. You can learn about the company’s mission, major players, competition, business ethic and all sorts of other things. Take the time to delve deeply into the site.
- Look at the company’s social media. Even if you aren’t applying for a job that has anything to do with the communications or marketing side of the firm, you can learn A LOT about a company based on the social media. What kinds of articles do they re-tweet? What do they post about on Facebook? Again, take notes.
- Google it! Sometimes it can be helpful to see what others are saying about the company. Did it just get a great write-up in a major publication? Are their customer reviews? Blog posts? Expressing an interest in the company through information you found off the company website can help you stand out.
- Scout out the competition. If you know the company’s major competitors you might be able to use that to your advantage. Point out things that you could bring to the table to give the company an edge.
- Research the person you will interview with. Without seeming creepy by having information about them, knowing about the person sitting across the desk can help you direct the conversation or find common interests.
