Millicent Margaret Amanda, better known as Milly-Molly-Mandy, is a happy, helpful little girl who lives with her parents, grandparents, and aunt and uncle in a little white cottage in the country. Milly-Molly-Mandy doesn’t seem to mind living with all these adults. She has friends nearby like her best friend Susan, Billy Blunt and Jilly.

Milly-Molly-Mandy runs errands for her family and helps her neighbors. She enjoys simple pleasures like sharing a warm mug of milk before the fire with Susan, minding the store for Miss Muggins who lives down the road or nursing an orphaned baby hedgehog.

Originally written in 1928, this series is reminiscent of a time when children had more chores and less scheduled activities. Joyce Lankester Brisley’s beginner chapter books are perfect for young readers. While Milly-Molly-Mandy’s docile nature may seem unrealistic in this day and age, her innocence is refreshing. Each chapter tells a short story of small town life and demonstrates how happiness comes from serving others rather than from possessing many things.
