This summer, for the first time in my life, the one-piece bathing suit is popular! The trend is getting covered in every major fashion and news publication here in the United States.
I grew up in a house that required all the girls wear one-piece swimsuits when lounging in the backyard to get sun or when at the neighborhood pool. My dad was adamant that we dress well and cover up even if the rest of the female population didn’t. Mom tried to find us good-looking suits, but that was a yearly challenge. There were years in high school when this was a real burden; when my overly aware self felt certain everyone was pointing and laughing at my covered stomach. In college, when I finally came into my own, I cared less for the looks and was grateful my dad has been smart enough to keep me from the leering eyes of the nearby boys.
Still, finding a one-piece bathing suit that is at least a little stylish has been more than a little challenging. There have been years I scoured the internet to find one. Other years I spent a very tiring shopping day, or days, looking for one. I don’t want the swimsuit to be a neon sign saying look at me, but I’d like to be in more than a simple black swim-team suit.
Well, this year, for the first time ever the options are plentiful and many of them are vintage-inspired. I don’t know whom to thank. Maybe it is the creators of Mad Men – they started the return of the feminine dresses and these new swimsuits are one more step in that direction. Or maybe it is the number of young women who are finally realizing they don’t need to dress in small scraps of material to attract the right kind of guy. Maybe it is the countless web searches my friends and I have done to find a one-piece. Or perhaps it is the fact that a number of highly influential fashion bloggers have written about their desire to wear only cute one piece suits. Whatever the reason, I’m loving it and hoping it stays around for a very, very long time.
