Based on a story by Leo Tolstoy, this picture book teaches the importance of living in the moment. Young Nikolai wonders what is most important in life and poses three questions to various animals to solve this riddle. Urgent pleas for help from creatures he encounters along the way appear to distract him from his quest. However, an old turtle helps Nikolai to see that he can discern the answers to these questions when he forgets about himself and gives himself to the service of others. Although it is quite simple, even older children would enjoy discussing this short book.
